Diving the Marine Room in La Jolla: Why the Water Turns Brown and How to Time It

If you dive the Marine Room at the south end of La Jolla Shores regularly, you already know the drill. Some mornings you wade in off the sand and can see clear across the flats. Other mornings you put your face in the water and can barely see your own hand. Same beach, same short walk from the car, completely different day. I get asked all the time whether the brown water is runoff, the tide, or the swell. At the Marine Room it is almost always the swell, and once you understand how it works you can usually tell what you are getting into before you even suit up. Here is how I read it.

Brown Water Is Dirt, Not Algae
The color tells you a lot. Green, hazy water is usually a plankton bloom, which is living stuff in the water that clears up on its own after a few days. Brown water is different. Brown is sand and silt that has been lifted off the bottom. The Marine Room sits on a big sand flat that runs the whole length of La Jolla Shores, so there is always plenty of loose sand around to cloud the water when something stirs it up. When you see brown, you are not looking at algae. You are looking at the beach floating in the water in front of you.
The Swell Is What Stirs It Up
The thing that lifts all that sand is swell. When waves come into shallow water they do not just move up and down, they push the water back and forth along the bottom. We feel that as surge. Over the sand and the reef, that back-and-forth motion picks up sediment and keeps it hanging in the water.
The part most people miss is that it is not really about how big the waves are. It is about the swell period, which is the number of seconds between waves. A long-period swell of 13 seconds or more reaches way deeper and works the bottom a lot harder than short, choppy windswell of the same height. A small long-period south swell can brown out the Shores when a bigger windswell would barely touch it.
That Brown Line Is Really a Depth Line
If you have ever swum out and crossed a sharp line from brown into clean blue, that line is basically the depth where the swell stops touching the bottom. Inside of it, the waves are dragging on the sand. Outside of it, the water is deep enough that the swell no longer reaches the bottom, so nothing gets stirred up.
This is where the Marine Room has a real advantage. The head of the La Jolla canyon sits close to this beach, so the bottom drops off fast not far offshore. That means the clean, deep water is often a shorter swim than it would be at a wide, shallow beach. A lot of days the brown band is narrow, and once you kick out to where the bottom falls away, it clears up.
The Tide Just Moves the Water Around
Everybody blames the tide, and it does matter, but it is not what makes the water dirty. The swell makes the dirt. The tide just changes how much water is sitting over the bottom while the swell works on it.
Low tide is the worst. With less water over the sand, the swell hits the bottom harder and browns out the shallows fast. A minus low on a swell day is about as bad as it gets at the Shores.
An incoming tide usually cleans things up. More water over the bottom softens the swell and tends to push cleaner water in toward the beach.
The hard outgoing tide after a high can dirty it up again as all that water drains back out over the flats.
So the Marine Room kind of breathes with the tide. The brown pushes in, sits for a while, and pulls back out over the course of the day.
Why the Marine Room Is Often Better Than Everywhere Else
There is a reason a lot of us head to the Marine Room when the rest of the county is blown out. It sits tucked behind Point La Jolla, so most west and northwest swell wraps around and loses a lot of its punch before it gets to the sand. That is why the Shores can still be diveable when the open reefs are getting hammered.
The catch is that a straight south or southwest swell has a clear shot up the coast. It wraps right into the Shores and lights up the whole sand flat. So the same beach that saves your day in a northwest swell can be the dirtiest spot around in a strong south. Always check the swell direction, not just the size.
A Typical Morning
Here is how it usually plays out on a late-summer day. Say there is a minus low right around sunrise and a small but long-period south swell in the water. First thing in the morning the sand is getting scoured by that low tide, so the flats are brown. As the tide comes up through the morning, more water covers the bottom, the surge backs off, and the brown line slides back toward the beach. By late morning you can swim out over the canyon edge into clean water at the same spot that looked hopeless at seven. Nothing changed but the tide and a few hours.
It Is Almost Never Runoff
Brown water can be runoff from rain and storm drains, but in the middle of a dry San Diego summer there is nothing to run off. The brown you see at the Marine Room in August is not pollution washing down the coast. It is clean ocean water carrying lifted sand. After a winter storm it is a different story, and you should stay out of any runoff for a few days for health reasons, but that is a separate problem from the summer murk.
How I Decide When and Where to Get In
It really comes down to two things: when you get in, and where.
On a calm day with little swell, timing is what matters. The sand is barely getting stirred, so I just try to avoid the minus lows and get in on an incoming tide when there is more water over the bottom.
On a real swell day, especially a south swell, where you get in matters more than timing. No tide is going to clean up the inside when a long-period swell is working the sand, so the move is to get out to the deeper water.
Get past the line. At the Marine Room the clean water is usually a short swim out, so I kick out to where the bottom drops off and the brown ends.
Watch the swell direction. If it is a strong south, I plan on the inside being dirty and dive deeper water. If it is northwest, I lean on the point for shelter and expect the Shores to hold up better than the open spots.
One more thing: do not trust the surface. The top can look flat and glassy while there is still a lot of surge down on the sand, and that surge is what keeps the water brown. Judge it by what the bottom is doing, not what the surface looks like.
Quick Checklist
Brown means sand from swell. Green means a plankton bloom. Two different problems.
Check the swell period and direction. Long period and a south angle are what dirty up the Shores.
Watch the tide. Minus lows and the hard outgoing tide are the bad windows. An incoming tide is your friend.
Use the canyon. The clean water is a short swim out at the Marine Room, so get past the line.
Remember the point. Northwest swell, the Marine Room is sheltered. Strong south swell, it is not.

Get in safe and keep an eye on the surge in the shallows. And remember that the Marine Room and most of La Jolla Shores are inside the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park and the no-take Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve, so it is a look-but-do-not-take zone. Always check the current CDFW boundaries and regulations before you get in the water.
