Reading the Marie South Swell: Why One California Cove Pumps While the Next Stays Calm

The swell that worked Southern California over the holiday weekend - Saturday through today, Monday, September 7 - was a strong south to south-southwest swell thrown off by Hurricane Marie. What made it worth writing about was not the size so much as how directional it was. Some beaches got hammered while a cove a few hundred yards away sat almost calm. That is the whole story of this swell, and it is a good lesson in how to read a south swell as a diver.

WHAT MARIE WAS - AND WHY IT WAS SO PICKY

The swell arrived from roughly 180 to 190 degrees - essentially straight out of the south - carrying long-period energy in the 12 to 14 second range. Long period matters. A 12 to 14 second wave drives far more energy deep into the water column than a short, choppy wind swell of the same face height, which means it reaches down and moves the bottom on shallow reefs. As reported by Surfline and the National Weather Service, exposed south-facing beaches were seeing roughly 6 to 10 ft of breaking surf while more west-facing beaches ran closer to 4 to 6 ft. The NWS carried a high-surf advisory and a coastal flood advisory into Tuesday, and called the swell peaking Sunday into Monday and only slowly backing off - so today is still at or near the peak.

DIRECTION BEATS HEIGHT

Here is the one thing I want every diver to take from this event: a single swell-height number does not apply equally to every spot. What matters is whether a given beach or reef has an open window toward where the swell is coming from.

  • South-facing beach: swell hits almost straight on - maximum energy, big surf.

  • Southwest-facing beach: still takes substantial energy - big surf.

  • West-facing beach: takes the swell at an angle - smaller.

  • Northwest-facing cove behind a headland: much of the swell is blocked - dramatically smaller.

Then add refraction. As a wave moves into shallow water, the part in the shallows slows down first, and that bends the crest toward reefs, points and shallow banks. That is how energy gets concentrated onto certain reefs and around certain points - and it is why two spots a mile apart can look completely different on the same day.

WHERE IT HIT HARDEST

South Orange County took the most consistent beating. Dana Point, San Clemente, the Trestles area and San Onofre all sit on a stretch of coast with a wide-open window to the south. Surfline had South OC head-high to overhead, with standout spots several feet overhead.

Newport and the Wedge were the extreme case. The Wedge is not simply big because the ocean is big - the end of the Balboa Peninsula and the jetty redirect and focus the incoming energy, so it can go from ordinary to spectacular when the direction lines up. Newport was reporting 5 to 8 ft Saturday with bigger sets, and lifeguards reportedly made 177 rescues that day. That number alone tells you how much water was moving.

Malibu and Point Dume stood out too. Forecasters flagged the south-facing Malibu sections as capable of running larger than the general 5 to 8 ft range, and the surf was actively chewing at the bluffs at Point Dume. South-facing San Diego County reefs also came up as the swell shifted more S/SSW, with standout summer spots reaching a couple of feet overhead.

WHY ONE COVE PUMPS AND THE NEXT STAYS CALM

Picture the SoCal coast as a maze of points, headlands, reefs and bays. With the swell out of the south, a south-facing reef gets the wave straight on: it shoals, refracts toward the reef, and concentrates into a heavy surge and current. Go around the corner to a northwest-facing cove behind the same headland and that headland blocks most of the energy - comparatively calm water.

Laguna Beach is the best example of this on the whole coast. You can have a reef getting absolutely worked and a cove right next to it that looks swimmable. That is not luck - it is orientation and refraction. It is also exactly why Laguna is so deceptive on a south swell, and why you cannot judge one cove by the one beside it.

THE TIDE MADE IT WORSE

This swell landed on above-normal, high evening tides, which pushed up the wave run-up and the flooding risk - hence the coastal flood advisory. Three things stacked at once: a large south swell, favorable exposure, and a high tide. That is why some spots saw far more dramatic run-up than the raw offshore swell height would suggest.

SPOT BY SPOT FOR DIVERS

San Onofre / San Clemente (exposed): one of the most naturally exposed stretches on the coast. For a diver that means much more than bigger waves - strong surge, poor visibility from stirred-up sand, heavy longshore current, and a lot of water moving over shallow reef. It can look manageable between sets and be a completely different animal underwater.

Dana Point (exposed, but local): the headland both protects and amplifies. The outer point takes it directly while coves behind the peninsula are more sheltered - but refraction can still wrap energy into pockets. A calm-looking surface inside a cove does not guarantee calm water on the outer reef.

Newport / The Wedge (exposed): the extreme. With 177 rescues on Saturday and some south-facing beaches near 10 ft, this is the last place I would want to be entering the water at the peak.

Point Loma / La Jolla (variable): Point Loma juts far enough out to intercept south swell, but the coast around it is not uniformly exposed - you get an exposed reef, then a shadow zone behind the headland, then another exposed reef. La Jolla is the same: some reefs have a clean window to the south while the cove itself can be well protected. Those shadow zones are the interesting water on a day like this - with one catch: water still moves around the edges, so you can find surprisingly strong current in an otherwise calm-looking spot.

Palos Verdes (variable): the peninsula sticks way out with reefs facing every direction, so you get direct exposure, refraction and shadowing all on one coastline. Expect very localized conditions - one cove taking a fraction of the energy of a point nearby.

Malibu / Point Dume (exposed): Point Dume interacts strongly with south swell and can run bigger than the regional forecast. Add active bluff erosion and it is not a place to be scrambling around the rocks.

Long Beach (the opposite): you would think a big south swell means big waves here, but Catalina and the coastline block most of the direct energy. Instead you get smaller surf with a lot of water movement on a high tide - the flooding risk without the surf. The NWS flagged the Alamitos Peninsula, Avalon and Malibu for coastal flooding.

THREE CATEGORIES FOR THIS SWELL

If you are deciding where - or whether - to dive on a swell like this, sort the coast into three buckets:

  • Directly exposed: San Onofre, San Clemente, Dana Point, Newport/Wedge, exposed Laguna reefs, Malibu. These took the most direct energy - not diveable at the peak.

  • Partially exposed and highly variable: Point Loma, La Jolla, the Laguna coves, Palos Verdes. Conditions can change dramatically from one reef to the next - scout, do not assume.

  • Shadowed and protected: certain north and west-facing coves behind major points, and the sheltered sides of the islands - Catalina, Anacapa, Santa Cruz. These can be dramatically smaller on the surface, though currents and surge can still bite around the edges.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES UNDERWATER

For divers the surf height is only half the story. A big long-period south swell means surge you can feel well below the surface, sand and sediment lifted off the bottom and held in the water column - which is your visibility gone - stronger longshore current, and shallow reef that is simply dangerous to work in close. The visibility hit is the part that lingers, and it does not clear the moment the waves drop.

WHEN IT CLEARS

Visibility recovery runs on its own clock, and it leans heavily on bottom type. Roughly: the day the swell arrives the bottom gets stirred; the next day or two visibility stays poor to moderate; then it improves fairly quickly if the wind stays friendly. Sandy beaches and shallow sandy reefs stay dirty longer because the sediment hangs suspended, while deeper rocky reefs tend to clear faster. That shallow-versus-deep split is exactly why, at places like La Jolla, Laguna, Dana Point and PV, dropping to deeper structure can find clean water while the shallows are still brown.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Marie was a textbook directional south swell, and the takeaway is simple: do not read a south swell off a single number, and do not judge a cove by the one next to it. Match the swell direction to each spot's exposure, respect that a calm-looking cove can still hold current, give it a day or two to settle after the peak, and when in doubt go deeper, go to a protected or leeward spot, or wait it out. No fish is worth getting worked on a shallow reef in this kind of water.
