Boat Anchoring for Spearfishing: Sand, Rock, and Mixed-Bottom Setups

Boat-based California spearfishing depends on a working anchor. Anchor right and you dive a productive spot for two hours and recover the boat right where you left it. Anchor wrong and you finish a dive to find the boat 200 yards downwind, or worse, find the anchor permanently wedged in rocks 30 ft below.
This guide covers anchor types, line and chain setup, and the specific approach for sand, rock, and mixed bottoms — the three bottom types California divers actually deal with.
The Anchor Types
Fluke/Danforth Anchor
Two large flat flukes that bury in sand or soft bottom. The standard choice for sand-bottom anchoring. Sets quickly, holds well in sand, lightweight relative to holding power.
Best for: sand bottoms, mud, soft sediment
Worst for: rock, weed-covered rock, heavy kelp
Plow Anchor (CQR, Delta)
Single-fluke plow design. Sets in a variety of bottoms and resets if direction changes. Heavier than a fluke for the same holding power but more versatile.
Best for: mixed bottoms, kelp edges, sand-rock transitions
Worst for: pure rock, severely tangled bottom
Grapnel/Folding Anchor
Multi-prong hook anchor that wedges into rock and structure. Designed to grab rather than bury.
Best for: rock bottoms, reefs, deliberate hook anchoring
Worst for: sand (does not bury), recovery (gets stuck)
Reef Anchor (Reef Hook)
Simple bent rebar or stainless rod with a weak link. Designed to hook reef and then straighten out for recovery when you pull up.
Best for: rocky California reefs where you do not want to risk losing a real anchor
Worst for: anything that needs serious holding power in wind or chop
Line and Chain Setup
The biggest mistake amateur boat divers make is connecting line directly to the anchor. The right setup:
6-10 ft of chain between the anchor and the line
Anchor line 5-7x the depth you are anchoring in (the "scope"). This is very important!
A galvanized swivel between chain and anchor — prevents twist binding
Trip line attached to the anchor crown — for unhooking rock anchors
Chain weight keeps the anchor angled correctly into the bottom. Without chain, the line pulls the anchor up at an angle that lets it skip rather than dig in.
Anchoring by Bottom Type
Sand Bottom (LJ Shores Offshore, Imperial Beach, Coronado)
Sand is the easiest bottom to anchor in. Use a fluke anchor with adequate chain. Approach upwind of your target spot, drop anchor as the boat drifts back, and let the wind set the anchor. Verify set by giving a firm tug on the line — if it holds without slipping, you are set.
Sand-bottom holding power is excellent if scope is right. 5:1 minimum, 7:1 in chop or wind.
Rock Bottom (LJ Cove, Pt Loma Kelp, Most California Reef)
Rock requires a different strategy. Two approaches:
Reef anchor that you accept may not come up if it wedges — cheap insurance
Plow anchor wedged in a known sand patch adjacent to the reef
Never use a Danforth on rock — the flukes hook and bind in cracks. Recovery becomes destructive: either snap the line, cut the anchor loose, or dive 30 ft to free it.
Mixed Bottom (Most California Kelp Edges)
Sand patches between rocky reef sections — the most common California setup. Plow anchor or claw anchor handles mixed bottoms best. Drop in a visible sand patch (look over the side, find the lighter-color bottom). Set up so the anchor falls into sand even if the boat drifts back toward rock.
Alternative: use kelp itself. Tie off to a stipe of giant kelp or bull kelp using a quick-release. Kelp holds well in moderate wind and releases instantly when you leave. Just watch the tide — extreme tide swings can put loaded kelp under tension.
Where to Drop
Where you drop the anchor decides where the boat ends up. Standard rule: drop up-wind of where you want the boat to sit, and let the wind drift the boat back over the productive zone. The anchor sets at the up-wind end of an arc, and the boat sits at the down-wind end.
For a kelp-bed dive in California, that often means:
Identify the productive structure (a rock pile, kelp pocket, or sand transition)
Note the wind direction
Drop the anchor 100-150 ft up-wind of the structure
Pay out scope as the boat drifts back
The boat ends up sitting over or just down-wind of the structure
The Dive-Off Protocol
Before any diver gets in the water:
Verify the anchor is set — give it a firm tug at the cleat
Note a visible landmark on shore — if the boat moves you will spot it
Set a buoy/float on the anchor line — divers know where the boat should be
Brief the dive team on what to do if the boat drifts (swim to it, do not chase)
Recovery
Pulling the anchor back up is often the hardest part. Steps:
Motor toward the anchor — slack the line, do not pull against the set
Pull straight up — sideways pull binds the anchor in structure
If the anchor is hooked in rock, motor over it and pull from the opposite side
Use the trip line if you have one — pulls the anchor backwards out of the hook
Worst case: free-dive down and physically unhook
When to Buy Better Gear
Most California small-boat divers use anchors that are one size too small. Anchor manufacturers rate holding power for ideal conditions; California chop and wind reduce that by 30-50%. Buy one size up from what the chart recommends. Add 50% more chain than you think you need. Treat the whole rig as cheap insurance — losing a dive day to a dragging anchor is far more expensive than the upgrade.
