California's Red Tide Calendar: Planning Around the Blooms That Blow Out Your Dive

You check the swell chart the night before. Long-period energy has backed off, the wind forecast is glass until noon, the tide swing is friendly. Everything says it should be a blue-water day. Then you drop in and the ocean is the color of split-pea soup, five feet of visibility, and you spend the morning staring at your own fins. Nothing on the forecast warned you, because the thing that ruined the dive wasn't swell or wind at all. It was a bloom.

Plankton blooms — what most people loosely call red tide — are the one seasonal factor in California that can override everything else. You can do all your homework on waves, wind, tide, and runoff and still get skunked on visibility because the water itself is full of living particles. The good news is that in California these blooms behave less like random bad luck and more like a calendar event. They show up in roughly the same windows year after year, in roughly the same places. Once you understand that rhythm, you stop getting ambushed and start planning around it.
What a red tide actually is
A red tide is not really about the tide, and it isn't always red. The term is a catch-all for a phytoplankton bloom — an explosion in the population of microscopic marine plants and plant-like organisms, most famously the single-celled dinoflagellates. Under the right conditions these organisms reproduce fast enough to double their numbers in a day or two, and when billions of them fill the top layer of the water column, the ocean changes color. Depending on the species and density you get everything from tea-brown to rust-red to a milky jade green.
The recipe is simple: nutrients plus light plus warmth plus calm. California's coastal upwelling drags cold, nutrient-rich water up from the deep. Long summer days deliver the sunlight. A warm surface layer and a stretch of settled weather let the bloom stack up near the surface instead of getting stirred back into the depths. Give the phytoplankton all four ingredients and they do what living things do when the buffet is open — they multiply until they run out of something.
For a diver, the practical consequence is that the water is now full of suspended organisms scattering your light. That's why a bloom can hand you five feet of visibility on a day when every other number on the forecast is perfect. Clarity isn't just about how much sediment the swell has kicked up — it's about what's actually living in the water, and a bloom loads the column with particles no amount of calm can settle.
Why blooms often look worse on calm days
Here's the part that trips people up, because it runs against instinct. We're trained to think calm equals clear: no swell, no surge, no sand in suspension, so the water should be gin. During a bloom, calm can be exactly the problem.
Wind and swell mix the water column. They fold the surface layer down and pull deeper water up, which disperses a surface bloom and thins it out. When the ocean goes flat and glassy for days, nothing mixes it. The phytoplankton sit undisturbed in the warm, well-lit top layer and keep multiplying, concentrating right where you want to see. That's why a bloom frequently looks its ugliest on the prettiest, calmest days — the same stillness that makes for an easy entry is also letting the soup thicken. A little bump of wind or a fresh swell can actually improve things mid-bloom by breaking up that surface layer. It's one of the few times a diver should be glad to see a whitecap.
The night upside: bioluminescence
Blooms aren't all bad news. Some of the same dinoflagellates that wreck your daytime visibility are the ones that light up the water at night. When certain bloom species are disturbed — by a breaking wave, a kicking fin, a passing hand — they flash a brief blue-green glow through a chemical reaction. Stack enough of them together and you get the electric-blue surf and glowing wakes that draw crowds to the beach after dark.
For divers and underwater photographers, an active bloom can mean the day dive is a wash and the night is spectacular. If the calendar and conditions line up and you know a bloom is running, it can be worth flipping your plan: skip the murky midday and put on a night dive, where the very organisms ruining your visibility become the show. Just weigh it against the health note below, and against the reality that night diving demands its own margin of safety.
A practical health note
Most California blooms are a visibility nuisance and nothing more. But some species produce compounds that irritate skin, eyes, and airways, and when a bloom is dense enough to trigger local advisories, it's worth treating seriously without getting alarmist about it.
The practical version: when a bloom or an advisory is up, minimize contact and exposure. If the water smells strongly off, if you notice skin or eye irritation, or if you feel a scratch in your throat or a cough near the surf, that's your cue to call it. Rinse thoroughly afterward. Blooms can also drop dissolved oxygen and, in some events, contribute to fish kills — another sign the water is stressed and not worth pushing into. None of this means panic. It means read the posted advisories, trust your body, and don't be the person who ignored an obvious warning because the parking lot was empty and the swell was down.
San Diego's twin red-tide windows
Now the useful part — the calendar. San Diego's coastline runs two fairly predictable bloom seasons, and if you dive the south end of the state you can plan around both.
The first is an early-summer red tide, and early June is the classic window. It has shown up multiple years running, tanking shore visibility from La Jolla down through the beaches to single digits right as the water is warming and the days are getting long. It's reliable enough that you can pencil it in: the front end of summer around San Diego is prime bloom territory, and a glassy early-June forecast is exactly when you should be most suspicious of the water color.
The second is a fall red tide, roughly October into November. As the seasons turn, San Diego gets a second bloom pulse that can drop nearshore visibility into the low single digits again. Between these two windows the region has genuinely clear stretches — but if you're planning a trip to the far south end, knowing that early June and late fall carry elevated bloom risk lets you aim for the gaps instead of the peaks.
Treat these as seasonal priors, not guarantees. Some years the June bloom is light and short; some years it's heavy and lingers. The point isn't that the water will definitely be bad on a given date — it's that you know which windows deserve a hard look and a backup plan.
The central coast greens up in summer
Head north and the pattern inverts from what your San Diego intuition expects, but the bloom logic is the same. Around Monterey and the central coast, summer is when the water greens up — roughly July through September in a normal year.
Central California's summer is defined by strong, cold upwelling. That upwelling is a nutrient firehose, and combined with long days it fuels heavy plankton growth. So the central coast can be cold, calm, and green all at once in July and August — a counterintuitive combination for anyone used to associating cold, settled water with clarity. Summer calm up there doesn't clean the water; it lets the bloom sit. That's the structural reason central-coast shore visibility can read pea-soup thin on a beautiful, windless summer afternoon while the same conditions farther south might be crystal.
As with the south, the window moves year to year. In a normal year the green runs July to September. In warmer years it can arrive earlier and hit harder, greening up as early as June and lingering later into fall. When you're planning a central-coast trip, assume peak summer carries real bloom risk and treat the shoulder seasons as your cleaner-water bets.
Where the bloom sits: read the water column
Not every bloom fills the whole column, and where it sits changes your entire game plan. Blooms tend to concentrate in a layer, and that layer can be near the surface or below it.
Often — especially in central California — the bloom is a surface layer, a band of green in roughly the top stretch of the water column that clears as you drop beneath it. This is why shore divers stuck in the shallow murk can be swimming in five feet of visibility while a boat diver dropping down a nearby pinnacle finds cleaner water at depth. When the bloom is up top, the move is to get below it: favor spots and structure where you can reasonably reach past the surface band into clearer water underneath.
Other times you get the reverse — a subsurface bloom or a murky layer at depth with cleaner water up shallow. In that case the shallows over reef and kelp can be your friend, and dropping deep just puts you into the worst of it. There's no universal rule for which way it'll go, which is exactly why you read the water in front of you. Look over the side before you gear up. Watch the color as you descend on the first drop. If it clears below the first stretch, plan to work deeper structure; if it clears up shallow, stay high and dive the reef tops. The bloom decides the depth — you just have to listen to it.
Planning around the calendar
Put it together and blooms become one of the more manageable visibility factors in California, precisely because they run on a schedule. Swell and wind you forecast day to day. Blooms you plan seasons ahead. A few practical habits:
Shift trips toward the cleaner windows. If you're picking dates for a San Diego trip, aim away from the early-June and late-fall bloom peaks. Planning the central coast, treat deep summer as elevated risk and lean on late spring or fall for your best shot at clear water. You can't move the ocean, but you can move your calendar.
During an active bloom, chase depth and structure. When a surface bloom is running, boat-access reefs, pinnacles, and offshore structure that let you drop below the green will out-fish the shore-tier murk every time. If you're limited to the beach, favor the spots where you can reach deeper water without a long swim through soup.
Watch the calendar and stage your logistics around it. Because the windows are semi-predictable, you can plan travel, time off, and tank fills to land in the gaps rather than the peaks. A little seasonal awareness saves you from burning a precious trip on water you could have known would be blown out.
Remember a bloom can clear in days. Blooms are dynamic. A shift in wind, a fresh swell, a drop in temperature, or the bloom simply running out of nutrients can flip green water back to blue in a matter of days. So a bad report today isn't a sentence for the week. If a bloom is up and you have flexibility, wait for a change in conditions — a bit of wind, a new swell, a temperature break — and re-check. The same ocean that soured over a weekend can come clean by mid-week.
The takeaway
Blooms are the wildcard that can beat every other number on your forecast — but only if they catch you off guard. In California they mostly don't have to. San Diego runs an early-summer bloom around early June and a fall bloom into October and November.
