Samba and Loss of Motor Control: Freediving's Warning Before Blackout

Most divers know about freediving blackout - the sudden loss of consciousness that can happen on or near the surface after a deep dive. Far fewer know about its precursor: samba and loss of motor control (LMC). These are the warning signs that come before full blackout, and they are the most important signals a buddy can spot.

If you can recognize samba and LMC in yourself or your buddy, you can intervene before a full blackout happens. This guide covers what they are, what they mean, and what every freediver needs to know.
What Samba Is
Samba is the freediving term for involuntary muscle twitching, usually in the head, neck, jaw, and shoulders, that happens when the brain runs critically low on oxygen. The name comes from the rhythmic shaking that resembles a samba dance step. It is not subtle - the head wobbles, the jaw chatters, the eyes may roll back, and the diver loses fine motor control of the affected muscles.
Samba typically happens within seconds of surfacing from a deep or long dive. The diver is conscious during samba - they may even be aware they are shaking - but their motor control is compromised. Without intervention, samba often progresses to full blackout within seconds.
What LMC (Loss of Motor Control) Is
LMC is the broader category that samba falls under. It refers to any partial loss of voluntary muscle control caused by hypoxia (low oxygen). Samba is one form. Other forms include:
Slurred speech or garbled signaling
Inability to grip a buoy or boat ladder
Disorientation and confusion ('where am I?' moments)
Loss of coordination - difficulty staying upright or removing the mask
Glassy eyes, unfocused stare, delayed responses
LMC is the brain's last warning before consciousness is lost entirely. The hypoxic threshold for full blackout is just below the LMC threshold - if the diver does not get oxygen to the brain immediately, blackout follows.
Why It Happens
Samba and LMC happen when the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood drops below the threshold needed to maintain full motor function. Two factors converge to make this most likely on or near the surface after a dive:
During the dive, water pressure keeps the partial pressure of oxygen artificially elevated, which masks how depleted the diver actually is
On ascent, that pressure drops rapidly. The partial pressure of oxygen drops with it, and the brain hits its hypoxic threshold within seconds of surfacing - the so-called 'shallow water blackout' window
This is why most blackouts happen at the surface or in the last 15 feet of ascent, not at depth. And why samba and LMC tend to appear in the first 15-30 seconds after the diver surfaces.
What to Do If You See It in a Buddy
If you spot any sign of samba or LMC in your buddy, treat it as an emergency:
Get to them immediately. Do not wait to see if they recover on their own
Support their head and keep their airway out of the water
Hold them in a position where they can breathe even if they go fully unconscious
Talk to them - clear, simple commands like 'breathe' help keep their attention if they are still conscious
If they progress to full blackout, perform standard rescue: blow on their face, talk loud, tap their cheek, and call for help if you have boat support
Stay with them at the surface for at least 30 seconds after symptoms resolve - secondary blackouts can happen in that window
If you are diving alone, samba and LMC are far more dangerous - by definition there is no one to assist. This is why solo diving is fundamentally riskier than buddy diving and why the freediving community recommends one-up-one-down protocols universally.
What It Means for the Diver Who Experienced It
If you experienced samba or LMC, several things are now true:
The dive that caused it was past your safe limit - whether by depth, time, or both
Your fitness, breath-hold tolerance, and recovery cycle need adjustment
You should not dive again that day - your residual hypoxia and CO2 buildup raise the risk of repeat events
The next session, dial back depth and time by 30-50% and rebuild slowly
If samba or LMC happens repeatedly, take a coached freediving course to identify what is wrong with your technique
Prevention
Build depth and breath-hold time progressively, not in jumps
Pace your sessions: long surface intervals between deep dives, ideally 2-3 minutes minimum
Avoid hyperventilating before dives - it suppresses the urge-to-breathe signal and pushes you closer to blackout without warning
Recovery breaths after every dive: hook breaths, controlled exhale and inhale, repeated 3-5 times
Do not chase fish in the last 10-15 feet of ascent. Let go of the gun if you have to. The shaft can be retrieved, you cannot
Always dive with a buddy who knows the surface watch protocol
The Stakes Are Real
Samba and LMC are gifts. They are the body's last warning before consciousness is lost, and they are the moment a competent buddy can save a life. Every freediver should be able to recognize them in themselves and in others - and every freediver should treat them as serious incidents, not minor close calls. If samba or LMC happens to you, the next session is for resetting limits, not for pushing them.
