Sun Angle and Spearfishing: When to Hunt With the Light, When to Hunt Against It

Two divers hunt the same kelp bed on the same day. One sees half a dozen yellowtail and goes 2 for 3. The other sees nothing and skunks. Same water, same fish, same tide. The difference was sun angle. The successful diver positioned themselves so the sun was at their back and the fish were illuminated; the unsuccessful diver hunted into the sun and could not pick fish out of the glare.

What the Sun Does Underwater
Sunlight penetrating the water column refracts and scatters. The deeper and more angled the light, the more it spreads and the less directional it becomes. A few practical consequences:
Direct overhead sun lights up shallow water in flat, even brightness
Low-angle morning and evening sun creates strong directional shadows
Sun behind you puts fish in front of you in clear light
Sun in front of you puts a glare layer between you and your target
Sun side-lit creates kelp shadows that fish use as cover
Hunt With the Sun Behind You
The fundamental rule of stalking: keep the sun at your back. When the sun is behind you:
Fish are lit clearly — you can ID species, size, and shot angle at distance
Your shadow falls away from your target, not onto it
Your silhouette against the sky is harder for the fish to read
Refraction and glare work against the fish, not you
On a typical California morning dive, the sun rises in the east and you want to hunt with the sun at your back. That often means working west-facing structure in the early morning, then shifting to east-facing structure as the sun moves overhead and then west.
The Glare Layer
When the sun is in front of you, water surface reflection creates a glare layer that obscures everything beyond about 30 degrees up from horizontal. You lose top-down visibility entirely. Fish swimming through that glare layer disappear from view.
If you must hunt into the sun (sometimes the structure forces it), the workaround is to dive deeper. Below 15-20 ft the surface glare becomes irrelevant. The cost is shorter bottom time.
Fish Behavior by Sun Angle
Bright Overhead Sun
Most reef fish pull into shadows under kelp canopy, under overhangs, or in cracks. Predators slow down — bright light reveals them too. The aggressive feeding windows of dawn and dusk close around midday. This is when calico bass and sheephead are easiest to approach (they hide in predictable shadow zones) but pelagics like yellowtail and white sea bass go off the bite.
Low-Angle Morning/Evening Sun
The prime hunting window for pelagic species. Low light = predator activation. Bait pushes shallow, sun angle creates directional shadows, and predators key off the contrast between sunlit bait and shadowed cover. This is when white sea bass, yellowtail, and big calico bass feed.
Overcast Day
Diffuse light = no shadows. Fish do not have shadow zones to hide in and predators do not have shadow zones to ambush from. Behavior tends to be middle-of-the-road — neither the hide-and-rest pattern of midday nor the feeding pattern of low-light. Slightly more active fish than bright midday but less predictable than dawn/dusk.
Sun Angle and Specific Targets
White Sea Bass
Dawn and dusk are the windows. WSB use the low-light to ambush from kelp canopy onto bait. Hunt with the sun at your back, focus on the kelp-water interface at depth.
Yellowtail
Most active in mid-morning when the sun is still relatively low. They cruise the canopy edge looking for bait pinned shallow. Sun-behind positioning lets you see them at distance.
Calico Bass
Bright overhead sun pulls them into shadow zones — under kelp canopy, under rock overhangs, in cracks. This is the easiest time to find them but they may be reluctant to come out for a shot.
Halibut
Bright sun on sand makes halibut harder to spot — they blend perfectly with the lit sand. Low-angle side light creates micro-shadows around their body outline that reveal them.
Planning the Day Around Sun Angle
Working sun angle into your dive plan:
Identify which side of the structure (east-facing vs west-facing) is sun-lit at your dive window
Pick the side where the sun would be behind you
Dive the dawn or dusk window if your target is pelagic
Dive the midday window if your target is reef-resident in shadow zones
Plan to shift structure as the sun moves — east-facing in the morning, west-facing in the evening
When Sun Angle Doesn't Matter
Three conditions reduce sun-angle considerations to background noise:
Overcast skies — no directional light to plan around
Deep dives past 30-40 ft where surface light is mostly gone
Murky water where particulate scatter eliminates directional shadows
On those days, focus on current and bait location instead. But on any clear sunny day in California, sun-behind positioning is one of the highest-leverage decisions a diver can make.
